When a loved one passes away far from home — or when remains need to be transported to a different state for a service or burial — the logistics can feel overwhelming. Trusted Cremations in Schaumburg offers forwarding and receiving services to help families navigate this process. Here is everything you need to know about transferring remains across state lines.
What Is Cremation Forwarding?
Cremation forwarding occurs when a funeral home handles the initial care of the deceased and then transfers the body to a funeral home or crematory in another city or state for final disposition. At Trusted Cremations, our forwarding service is $300 within a 50-mile radius of Schaumburg. This covers basic services of the funeral director and staff, removal of remains, preparation of remains, and local transportation to the carrier or another funeral home.
What Is Cremation Receiving?
Receiving is the reverse — when remains are transferred from another location to Trusted Cremations for cremation or final disposition. This is common when a family member passes away in Illinois while visiting from out of state. Our receiving service is $300 within 50 miles, covering basic services, care of remains, and transportation to our facility.
Beyond 50 Miles
For locations more than 50 miles from Schaumburg, an additional charge of $1.00 per mile applies for each mile beyond the 50-mile radius. This is a transparent charge with no hidden markups.
Shipping Cremated Remains to Another State
- By mail: The U.S. Postal Service USPS Priority Mail Express is the only service that legally ships cremated remains within the U.S.
- By car: Cremated remains may be transported across state lines by a family member. No permit is required for interstate transport of cremated remains.
- Internationally: International shipping requires a death certificate, cremation certificate, and often additional documentation from the destination country’s consulate.
What Documents Are Needed to Transfer Remains?
Transferring remains across state lines requires a certified death certificate, a burial-transit permit issued by the State of Illinois, and if the remains are being flown, additional airline documentation. Our staff handles all required documentation on your behalf.
When Does Forwarding or Receiving Make Sense?
- A family member passes away in Illinois but the family lives in another state
- A loved one passes away out of state while visiting Illinois
- Remains need to be transferred to a national cemetery in another state for military burial
- A family chooses Trusted Cremations for our flameless cremation option but the death occurred far from Schaumburg
